Archives and Collaboration February 3, 2011

I find that in my archives classes, we talk a lot about the need for collaboration between archival institutions. The example, of course, is the many library networks and alliances out there. Archives are a little different. They’ve grown up in a much more independent environment and often compete for collections. In my class on appraisal, we’ve been discussing how collection policies can help to encourage collaboration by showing others how they can help by directing collections to your institution and by discouraging them from trying to collect the same materials. But, I feel like the archival profession can do more. Can’t we talk to each other? We all have the same (or similar) goals. Am I just not seeing where the collaboration is at?
